Unlocking Your Success on the ACT Science Test

In this fourth installment of our ACT series, we dive into the ACT Science Test, which is crucial for boosting your composite score and opening doors to college admissions and scholarships.

Understanding the ACT Science Test

  • Format: 40 questions in 35 minutes

  • Passages: 6 passages with increasing difficulty

  • Scoring: 1-36, contributing 25% to your composite score

Reporting Categories

  • Interpretation of Data (40-50%): Analyze scientific data in tables, graphs, and diagrams.

  • Scientific Investigation (20-30%): Understand experimental tools, procedures, and design.

  • Evaluation of Models, Inferences, and Experimental Results (25-35%): Judge the validity of scientific information and form conclusions.

Passage Types

  1. Data Representation (2-3 passages): Focus on graphic and tabular material, recognizing relationships and trends.

  2. Research Summaries (2-3 passages): Interpret experimental design and results.

  3. Conflicting Viewpoints (1 passage): Compare alternative hypotheses and viewpoints.

Skills Tested

  • Interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving. It's a science reasoning test, not a knowledge test.

Strategies for Each Passage Type

Data Representation

  • Quickly interpret graphs and tables by focusing on labels, legends, and identifying trends.

  • Don't read passages with less than 100 words; use data to answer questions.

Research Summaries

  • Skim through text, focusing on italicized words and key formulas.

  • Use both data and text to find answers.

Conflicting Viewpoints

  • Summarize differing hypotheses and analyze viewpoints.

  • Allocate more time for this passage as it’s the most difficult.

General Test-Taking Strategies

Time Management

  • Allocate 6-7 minutes for Data Representation, 7-8 minutes for Research Summaries, and 9 minutes for Conflicting Viewpoints.

  • If stuck on a question for more than 25 seconds, mark an answer and move on.

Answering Techniques

  • Use the process of elimination.

  • Infer answers using context and ensure you're referring to the correct data.
