8 Tips for Prep Success on the ACT

Are you preparing for the ACT? If so, it’s important to approach your prep with strategy, focus, and the right tools. In this episode of the U-Prep Test Prep Podcast, we cover eight crucial tips that will guide you through a successful ACT prep journey. Whether you're a first-time test-taker or looking to boost your score, these strategies are designed to help you study smarter, not harder.

1. Create a Study Plan

The first key to ACT success is a solid study plan. Start by setting a goal score and understanding your areas of weakness. Taking a diagnostic test will help pinpoint what you need to focus on most. Once you know what to study, plan out your study schedule. Whether it’s practicing a few math problems or reading a passage a day, consistency is crucial, especially if your test date is fast approaching.

Pro Tip: Use an ACT Study Planner to stay organized!

2. Know the Format of the ACT

Understanding the structure of the ACT is half the battle. Familiarize yourself with the timing of each section and the types of questions you'll encounter. Knowing the format helps you manage your time effectively on test day. For more support, consider using resources that break down each section of the test, or even better, join a bootcamp that offers in-depth guidance on test format and timing strategies.

3. Use Official ACT Materials

It’s important to practice with real ACT materials. Whether you’re using ACT's Official Guide (also known as "Big Red") or subject-specific books, practicing with real questions gives you a clearer idea of what to expect. When it comes time to take a full-length practice test, make sure to use the same format (paper or online) as the one you’ll face on test day.

Quick Tip: Start small with ACT's Question of the Day if you need bite-sized practice!

4. Take Full-Length Practice Tests

Practicing with full-length ACT tests is crucial. Not only will it help you get comfortable with the pacing of the exam, but it also reduces test-day anxiety. If possible, take at least three full-length practice tests before your actual test day. Simulate your testing environment to mirror the real thing—quiet, timed, and distraction-free.

5. Know How to Use Your Calculator

While you don’t need a calculator to solve every problem, it can save you precious time during the ACT Math section. Make sure your calculator is ACT-approved and that you know how to use it efficiently. Don’t wait until test day to get familiar with it—practice using it at least two weeks in advance to ensure you're comfortable navigating its functions.

6. Memorize Key Math Formulas

Unlike some tests, the ACT doesn’t provide you with a list of math formulas. That means you need to have certain formulas memorized ahead of time. And it's not just about knowing them—you need to practice applying them to problems, so make sure you work these into your study sessions.

7. Practice with Timing

Time management is essential on the ACT. Whether it’s the fast-paced Math section or the challenging Reading passages, you need to train your brain to work within the test’s time constraints. Always use a timer when practicing, and keep track of how much time you spend on each section to refine your pacing.

8. Master Test-Taking Strategies

Even with the best prep, you might encounter questions you’re unsure about. That’s where test-taking strategies come in. Learn techniques to eliminate wrong answers, make educated guesses, and handle tough questions without losing confidence. The ACT Official Guide offers some strategies, but you can also enroll in a bootcamp that covers these tactics in-depth for each subject area.

By following these tips, you’ll not only improve your confidence but also maximize your performance on the ACT. If you need personalized support, don't hesitate to reach out to U-Prep Test Prep for more guidance on your journey. Happy studying, and good luck on test day!
